First Views of Mt. Elgon

These beautiful landscape views from Mt. Elgon
Park were taken from Elephant Bluff.  The maize
fields were almost mature and the patchwork farms
along with the little villages of thatched round homes
made it breathtaking.  The pictures don't show the
depth of the valleys below.

Phillip was our guide.  He has lived in the area all
his life and helps rescue people when they get lost
in the park.  He has 2 little boys and his wife is going
to college in Uganda to get a teaching degree.

Naitiri Street Market

This street market in Naitiri is typical of the markets in most
villages and towns.  The goods are spread out on a huge
canvas and people shop.  The clothing may be used or new,
but what we saw it looked clean and usable.  It surpasses
Nordstrom in variety.  Some of this stuff is probably from
 Nordstrom from several years ago..

The two boys followed us around, so I took their picture.
They tried to hop on our truck, but we made them get off.

Streetboard Meeting at Naitiri Market

The 8 elders of Kitale Zone set up a streetboard meeting
at Naitiri Market on a Saturday afternoon.  They talked to
people, answered questions, and gave out pamphlets and
brochures.

From Elephant Bluff of Mt. Kenya

Sister Babcock takes in the breathtaking views.
Down in the valley are many little villages with
thatched roof houses.

Mt. Elgon sits on the Ugandan border.  That is
probably Uganda on the backside of the mountain.
Notice the acacia forest of trees growing up the valley.

There are many water buck in the Park.

The monkey on the water tank is next to our house.

Celebrating New Year's Day 2013

On New Year's Day we took E/S Babcock from Eldoret
to Mt. Elgon Park where we watched for game and hiked
to Kitum Cave.  These are views of the cave entrance
both outside and from the inside.

Walking back to the truck we each took a turn swinging
on the vine hanging from the tree.  Who said old people,
even missionaries, can't be swingers?  Most of us didn't
swing very high, though.

Christmas, Kitale, and Sunflowers

These children from Mautuma Branch were singing
Christmas songs and did a Nativity skit.  The boy in front
was actually leading the song.  They learn the songs in
English even though they speak only Swahili.  They used
a flashlight for the star.  In the next picture these are the
sheep, shepherds, and people in the story.

In downtown Kitale a herd of cattle move through--a very common scene.

The field of sunflowers is the crop which is planted
after the maize is harvested.  They always look
so cheerful.
